Hello I haven't posted here before so hi to all. My background is e-democracy, e-engagement and e-participation. PhD in 2001 looked at significance of new technology for democratic participation and community development. Worked previously at Napier Uni in Edinburgh on research to develop/assess e-Petitioning to the Scottish Parliament. Also worked on several other research projects related to policy and e-participation. Changed course slightly when came down to Lakes a few years ago to get remarried, and have been working recently with a local council in the Lake District - away from my home territory Edinburgh.
At local authority level in Cumbria, I've been working half the week on developing engagement and consultation, and recently received funding from Cumbria Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (CIEP) to run a learning conference titled 'New Media for Youth Engagement'. See http://engagingeden.wikispaces.com/ for more information, and also our small and hurried beginnings for a demo model of youth participation at www.edenmedia.org.uk Steve Thompson from Teeside is helping and is using low or no cost software to develop the demo for the conference. It's all rather hurry flurry (conference is on 29th June), so hoping some of you can help either with advice or more practical input. I'm today applying for a smallish amount of additional funding to bring in a facilitator to help organise the Q & A session, short workshops and action plan outcomes at conference.
The question I want to explore is:
"How and to what extent can new media be designed specifically to provide a routine, sustainable, interactive channel through which young people in Cumbria take a major role in engaging with one another and with those who deliver services to them, to continuously improve the things that affect them and/or mean something to them and their local areas?"
There's some scope for future development of youth e-engagement in Cumbria in a collaborative and practical way so please get in touch with me asap if you are interested. It's all very exciting!!
