I suggest being very careful about concluding too much from stats like "55% of the public simply do not want to be involved in national decision-making." ("Lies, damned lies, and statistics"?) (1) It reminds me a bit of arguments that were made a f…

Convening collaboration I realise I'm going to have to explain this better to have a chance of attracting or convening potential collaborators. There's more about this on the Sustainable Community Action wiki Below is just a simple start. Data.gov…

Participation and countering the 'it isn't representative' argument

Participation in a democracy doesn't have to be seen as a threat to representative democracy. The two co-exist and have done for a long time. Those who seek to be defensive of the status quo may wish to frame it as an either / or question but it doesn't have to be seen this way. Participation and representative democracy can be seen as mutually enriching.

Online participation brings new opportunities, but there's a kind of almost automatic questioning that every new avenue of online particpatio… Continue

Next time can we give ourselves shorter sessions...

The first BarcampUKGovweb had 50 session slots for around a hundred participants. Typically the sessions were 25 mins. BarcampUKGovweb09, although going on an hour longer, had only 30 slots for some 120 plus (?) participants. To me this ratio is getting just too far away from the spirit of barcamp: "8th Rule: ..., you HAVE to present. (Ok, you don't really HAVE to, but try to find someone to present with, or at least ask questions and be an interactive participant.)"

I agree there doesn't have… Continue

Hi Phil, yes I'd be interested in that. I'm currently working on a project in Wisbech (North Cambridgeshire) where we're trying to engage 'hard-to-reach' groups using social media. We've done a community survey and some focus groups to ensure we involve residents in the design of the solution. I'm very interested in user centred design and keen to see where we can use similar techniques for digital engagement / participation projects. Sounds like it will be hard to choose which sessions to attend!

Thanks for your comments Phil.

I'm not sure if there's the interest to start a separate page. What do you reckon?

Happy to pick up on the wellbeing stuff with you. I absolutely believe in mixing online and offline - one of the core tenets of Harringay Online.

Hi Phil. Thanks for getting in touch. I'm on twitter too as helenmilner, so please do follow me there too. Interesting to hear about your wiki, as you say probably not the level that most people in UK online centres are to just yet. Give them time though.
